Berkeley City Club Wedding » Berkeley, California
For Ngân and Steven, the Berkeley City Club wasn't just a wedding venue—it was a meaningful intersection of their personal histories and passions. Steven, an architect, was drawn to the building's historical significance as a masterpiece designed by Julia Morgan, California's pioneering female architect whose legacy includes landmarks like the Hearst Castle. For Ngân, a Cal Berkeley alumna, the Club held nostalgic memories from her college days when she attended recruiting events there. Upon revisiting it as a potential wedding venue, they experienced the architectural marvel through fresh eyes, falling in love with its stunning pool and charming outdoor patios.
Ngân's artistic talents shone throughout their summer wedding with DIY contributions included handcrafted pottery that served as vessels and vases for floral centerpieces, as well as elegant signage and escort cards featuring her own brush lettering. The day was also thoughtfully designed to honor absent loved ones. A seat was reserved during the ceremony for Ngân's father, who had passed away eight years earlier. Following a difficult year in which Ngân lost her grandmother, aunt, and cousin in quick succession, the wedding stood as a joyful celebration that family members traveling from across the globe eagerly anticipated. A special memorial table honored these cherished individuals, and Ngân wore pieces of her grandmother's jewelry as a touching tribute.
The day began with Ngân getting ready alongside close friends before two meaningful first looks—one with her family and another with Steven in the Berkeley City Club's picturesque courtyard. The couple then slipped away for intimate portraits in the historic pool area and back patio before exchanging vows on the mezzanine balcony, surrounded by their extensive circle of friends and family.
Their reception was filled with more personal touches, from heartfelt and humorous toasts to table visits while wearing traditional Vietnamese ao dais. In a touching moment, Ngân chose her older brother—to whom she had donated a kidney seven years earlier—as her partner for the father-daughter dance. His thriving health and his daughter Mia, the two-and-a-half-year-old flower girl, were living testaments to their special bond. As friend DJ Proof kept the energy high, Ngân and Steven surprised everyone on the dancefloor by emerging on roller skates—a pandemic hobby they wanted to incorporate into their celebration. The evening concluded with a festive sparkler exit outside the Berkeley City Club before guests continued the with an after party at a nearby bar. Truly a day to remember!
